Rev. Dr. Jerome Berryman

The Rev. Dr. Jerome Berryman (1937-2024) was a scholar, a practitioner, a teacher, a fierce advocate for children, and most importantly, a dedicated husband, father, and grandfather. He was also a dear friend and mentor to Godly Play storytellers, staff, trainers, and scholars worldwide. His infectious laughter, light, and his unwavering commitment to centering children will be missed by all. Jerome gave us the gift of a way of being with children, with one another, and with God, that is honest, brave, and deeply faithful.

Jerome was indefatigably committed to the inner lives of children. Jerome insisted that we see and honor the innate wisdom, the integrity and the wholeness of every child; that we, in turn, sit with them in wonder so that we all might become wise together. It this work, this practice, he would say, that is essential, that is inseparably linked and absolutely necessary to the healing, renewal, and salvation of humankind. This was Jerome’s life’s work. This is his legacy. And it is this same work into which Jerome continues to invite us, even now.
